Over the years, certain cars have earned the right to be referred to as legends. Some are born to it through marque pedigree, others achieve it through outrageous brilliance or infectious character, and, in the 40th-anniversary year of Classic & Sports Car magazine, we decided it was time we celebrated some of the most memorable machinery we have had the pleasure of sampling. For the first in this new series presenting the best from the pages of C&SC over the past 15 years (check our Contents page to find out when each was first published), we have concentrated on the most popular classic genre: sports cars. That popularity made it incredibly hard to compile, so before picking our favourites we first had to decide on a definition for what constitutes a sports car. We settled on three key principles. First, it had to have an open top: the wind in your hair is one of the key pleasures of a traditional roadster. And ideally only two seats - a sports car is a selfish indulgence, and all the better for it. There are a few exceptions to both of these, but our third rule was non-negotiable. Forget practicality, and never mind big power outputs, heady top speeds and rapid 0-60 times, the essential feature of each and every one of the 70-plus machines featured here is that it was designed with a singular purpose in mind: the pursuit of pure driving pleasure.
